112 Greene Street, the current home of The Garment Room was the original home of 112 Workshop, a raw space open between 1970 and 1980, offering exhibition space for installation and performance for the new generation of conceptual artists who emerged from the radicalized minds and cultural upheavals of the previous decade. With artists having complete control to curate their shows, the space introduced and showcased the challenging and inspirational works of hundreds of artists. During the life of this laboratory it produced a list of influential performers and artists that helped shape the cultural cityscape over the next 30 years, including names like Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgois, Chuck Close, Spalding Gray, Phillip Glass, Fran Lebowitz, Jeffrey Lew (cofounder), Gordon Matta Clarke (co-founder), Richard Mock, Richard Serra, William Wegman. The space was also home of Greene Street Recordings, one of the early headquarters of hip-hop where countless groundbreaking records were created within its walls during the 1980's and 1990's. A few of the artists that recorded there include RUN-DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Sonic Youth, , Ice Cube, Riot, Bonnie Tyler, Chaka Kahn, James Brown, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Jenny Burton, John Robie, Afrika Bambaataa, New Order, Dave Matthews, George Benson, Roy Ayers, Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul,  Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Inspecta Deck, Raekwon, Tricky, Jungle Brothers, and Beastie Boys.

Today, well over a decade since the closing of 112 Workshop, Tiffany Nicole is steady at the helm -- ready to lead the next generation of greatness in this space, bringing inspiration to the thousands of people who wander into our boutique every week from all over the world. We proudly honor the rich history of our space, and respect the influence and ingenuity of the generations of artistic voices before us. There is something truly magical about one space that has created countless success - an undeniable energy, contagious and unspoken, that consumes you.  Our shop is the visual testimonial to this overwhelming spirit of freedom and expression, and we celebrate the 100’s of artists who have literally made their mark on our landmarked walls and floors, transforming the entire space into a moveable feast of color that soaks up any form or shape and transforms it into art.  Our approach to retail is not only changing the way people experience shopping, but also changing the way people experience art, challenging reaction, and openly exposing the passion and culture behind creativity.
